Brenda Rigdon led the design for this project while employed with the Adrian Design Group in Adrian, MI.
The owners of this building used the MEDC Façade Improvement Grant Program to clean and restore masonry, repair and repaint tin window hoods, and install new second and third floor windows. The unfinished wood storefront was repaired and painted to reflect the personality of the two businesses, which both cater to children. Encore Dance Studio teaches classical ballet and modern dance to children of all ages while Lenawee’s Heart and Soul offers art and music classes for Pre-K and elementary school students.
The rear of the building was in very poor condition. The windows and brick had been covered with stucco on a wood and metal lath frame during a previous renovation. The weight of the framing and stucco were pulling the wall out from the building, damaging the structure. The panels were removed, the brick was repaired, and new windows installed. In anticipation of future apartments, a cat-walk and fire escape were installed on the flat roof of the one-story rear addition.
